Shayan Kalantar

I’ve done all kinds of learning throughout my academic career, and everything I’ve learned shapes my approach toward tackling tasks. This has proven to be extra useful in the field of creative media production, where employing my flexibility, organization, and communicative skills have been instrumental in outputting top-notch work when multiple cross-disciplinary stakeholders are involved.

As an intern at Therapy Studios, I gained valuable experience understanding what really goes on behind the scenes of a super-bowl commercial, or what takes a great a feature film to the next level (or makes it flop!). Handling editing, VFX, and sound all in-house, it was easy to understand that consistently producing complex, multi-disciplinary projects required every department to be on the same page at all times. Updated versions came in steadily with new edits and comments, deadlines shifted as the scope concretized, but being a part of the game showed me just how vital flexibility, organized workflows, and clear communication are in keeping things moving.

I’m an American-Iranian, Los Angeles-based creative media specialist with an expertise in all things music and sound. My roots are in “classical” piano and composition with more than 18 years of practice, but I expanded on my passion for the sonic arts and modernized the skills I’ve honed through studying studio production/post-production, foley/sound design, mixing/mastering, field recording, jazz theory, traditional Persian music, piano performance, and much more.

I received my degree in music composition from UC San Diego in 2023 with honors and high distinction, and since then I’ve had the privilege of being a part of some pretty awesome projects, like helping sound design this animated scene from Meg Thee Stallion’s “Neva Play” music video.

I’ve always been eager to learn new things, and I’m grateful that the time I’ve devoted to studying music has taught me to enjoy the natural process of improvement. During my time at UCSD, I was able to complete the full lower-division course series in math, physics, biology, chemistry, and psychology alongside my music degree, and I continue to take courses at my local community college to stay ahead of the curve.

Technology has worked its way into every fiber of the fabric of society, and with AI lowering the barrier of entry to work which once demanded thorough technical understanding, the landscape of specialized roles is bound to see a huge shift, especially in media production. Being one of the first generations fully immersed in our new, technology-driven world from the start, I’m proactive in responding to my insights, and remain eager to identify and apply new innovations to my own work.
